Initial public health surveillance reported a human case of avian influenza in a Yakima County agricultural worker following direct exposure to infected dairy cattle. At the time of the initial report, the individual was experiencing mild symptoms, did not require hospitalization, and was recovering in isolation at home.
However, the situation deteriorated, and the resident became the first person in Washington state to die from the virus this year. The individual, who had underlying health conditions, was ultimately hospitalized with severe symptoms prior to their death. Despite this tragic development, both local health authorities and the CDC have emphasized that the overall public health risk remains low
The failed US policy in managing avian influenza has already cost the lives of millions of birds and tens of thousands of wild animals, and it is now costing human lives.
