Uruguay’s Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP), through the General Directorate of Livestock Services (DGSG), has declared a nationwide animal health emergency following the confirmation of a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5 outbreak in backyard poultry in the southwestern department of Colonia.
The epidemiological investigation was triggered by suspected clinical disease and mortality across multiple bird species on a backyard premises in Colonia. In response, official veterinary services placed the index premises under strict biological quarantine. All backyard birds and free-range production systems must remain housed in fully enclosed, roofed facilities, minimizing any potential direct or indirect contact with wild migratory birds.
