Regulatory authorities in Australia, led by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), have officially launched a comprehensive five-year strategic plan to address the significant public health burden of Campylobacter. This initiative, a cornerstone of the national food safety policy for the coming years, aims to reduce the incidence of human campylobacteriosis through science-based interventions across the entire supply chain.
The new action plan adopts an integrated framework involving regulatory bodies, primary producers, and the food service sector.
Key focus areas include:
- Enhanced Epidemiological Surveillance: Implementation of advanced reporting systems to facilitate rapid source tracking and the analysis of national disease trends.
- Stricter Processing Standards: Establishing more rigorous microbiological criteria for poultry processing facilities, alongside targeted measures for high-risk commodities such as leafy greens and berries.
- Retail and Institutional Oversight: Strengthening food safety protocols in commercial kitchens and retail environments to prevent cross-contamination, while fostering a robust "Food Safety Culture" across the industry.
A critical component of the plan responds to recent findings by FSANZ identifying Campylobacter isolates in poultry products with resistance to Ciprofloxacin. While overall resistance levels in Australia remain relatively low compared to global benchmarks, the plan prioritizes increased AMR monitoring and the reduction of "critically important" antimicrobials in livestock.
