Bird Flu Detected at Providence Poultry Market

14 June 2026

An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has been confirmed at Antonelli Poultry in Providence (live poultry market), according to a joint statement issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM). The virus was detected during a routine quarterly surveillance program conducted by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Officials noted that the affected birds, consisting of live ducks and chickens, originated from out-of-state suppliers rather than from Rhode Island farms.
In response to the detection, the State Veterinarian oversaw the humane depopulation of approximately 445 asymptomatic birds at the facility on June 13 to prevent further spread of the virus. In accordance with USDA protocols, the market will remain closed until at least five days after flock disposal and the completion of thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures.
