Australian authorities have officially confirmed the country's first mass mortality event linked to the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. The outbreak, which severely impacted a local seabird population off the coast of South Australia, marks a significant escalation in the spread of the virus within the continent's wildlife.
Testing conducted at the CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain in a flock of greater crested terns. Helicopter surveillance located 49 dead and 35 sick terns on rocky outcrops off Cape Jaffa, located approximately 250 kilometers south of Adelaide.
Despite the escalating crisis in wild bird populations, there remains no evidence of the virus spilling over into Australia's commercial poultry flocks. Many Australian farms have been operating under strict biosecurity lockdowns since the virus was first detected in wild migratory birds in June 2026.
