H5N1 in Australia

19 June 2026

Australia’s status as the final continent free from the devastating H5N1 avian influenza is currently under threat following a local detection.
The Subject: A single, sick migratory wild bird (brown skua).
Location: An isolated region in south-west Western Australia.
Historical Context: While various other strains of avian influenza have previously affected both wild and domestic bird populations in Australia, the continent had remained the last global refuge entirely free of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain.
Current Outlook Given the relentless and unprecedented global spread of the virus, its eventual arrival on Australian shores was highly anticipated.
