A massive foodborne outbreak affected resident physicians at the Hospital General de México “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” in Mexico City in late August 2026. Official epidemiologic investigations by Mexico’s federal Secretariat of Health identified contaminated table eggs consumed during an institutional breakfast as the likely vehicle of transmission.
Official reports confirm that 135 resident physicians developed acute salmonellosis, with 41 requiring hospital admission.
The exposure occurred during the morning breakfast service on August 31 at the outsourced residents’ cafeteria. The primary incriminated dish was scrambled eggs with chorizo, prepared by a third-party contractor. Clinical stool cultures and food surveillance confirmed Salmonella enterica as the etiologic agent. The hospital administration subsequently suspended the third-party catering service indefinitely.
