Illinois HPAI Outbreak: Nearly 935,000 Layers Depopulated

24 October 2026

A severe outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed at a large-scale commercial table-egg layer facility in Germantown, Clinton County, Illinois. According to official data from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in coordination with the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA), the virus breached biosecurity barriers at the Germantown Egg Co. complex, operated under the Rose Acre Farms integration, prompting the depopulation of approximately 934,600 laying hens.
State and federal veterinary authorities have placed the premises under strict quarantine and implemented standard containment, disposal, and disinfection protocols. This facility is the only large-scale layer operation in Clinton County.
Continuing to follow the same playbook over and over while naively expecting a different outcome is simply not going to work!
