Newcastle disease (ND) has resurfaced in Poland’s commercial poultry sector following a three-month period without confirmed cases, according to an official notification from the Polish Chief Veterinary Inspectorate.
Designated as outbreak No. 53 of 2026, the infection was confirmed on September 9, 2026, through laboratory testing at a commercial egg-laying farm in Zmiana Dolna, Wschowa Commune, Lubuskie Voivodeship. The affected holding housed approximately 78,673 Pullets/rearing laying hens.
In accordance with national and European biosecurity requirements, veterinary authorities have initiated emergency containment and eradication measures. These include the culling and safe disposal of all birds on the premises, thorough cleaning and disinfection, and the establishment of protection and surveillance zones around the affected holding.
This latest case marks the first confirmed occurrence of Newcastle disease on a Polish commercial farm since the 52nd outbreak was recorded on June 9, 2026, representing exactly three months without a detected farm-level outbreak. With the addition of the Wschowa County outbreak, Poland’s cumulative ND figures as of September 17, 2026, stand at 53 confirmed outbreaks, affecting a total of 3,843,913 birds nationwide.
