Mexico: HPAI H5N1 Outbreak in Commercial Layer Flock in Yucatan Peninsula

06 November 2026

Mexican veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 on a commercial poultry farm in the Yucatan Peninsula, ending a hiatus of more than two years without documented cases in the country's poultry sector.
According to a notification submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the H5N1 virus was identified in a commercial flock of 225,860 laying hens situated in the municipality of Umán. Following confirmation of the outbreak, all birds on the affected premises were culled.
While this event represents Mexico's first outbreak in commercial poultry in more than two years, the most prominent avian influenza events documented in the country prior to this incident involved rare human infections.
