An outbreak of Newcastle disease was reported in Morbihan (Saint Anne d'Auray, Auray). Poultry displayed first digestive then nervous clinical signs with increasing mortality. No movement of animals from or to the farm recorded.
A 3-km protection zone and a 10-km surveillance zone were set up. Poultry farms in the area are subject to movement restrictions. All poultry were destroyed on 23 December 2010 and cleaning and disinfection operations started on the same day.
Chronology
•16/12/2010 : clinical suspicion (digestive and nervous signs, mortality(~ 700 pigeons dead or killed during the clinical period)
•22/12/2010 : confirmation of the infection by the national reference laboratory
•23/12/2010 : culling of the pigeons on site (destruction in an incineration plant) (~ 1800 piegons culled)
•23/12/2010 : preliminary cleansing and disinfection
•18/01/2011 : estimated date of achievement of cleansing and disinfection operations
