Hong Kong: Mai Po closes on likely avian influenza case

02 April 2010

The Mai Po Nature Reserve has been closed for three weeks following a suspected case of avian influenza in a dead barn swallow near the area.
The reserve will not accept visitors until April 20 as a precautionary measure.
Wild birds frequently make the reserve their home, with barn swallows usually visiting Hong Kong in spring and summer. The bird's carcass was collected at the Mai Po section of Castle Peak Road in Yuen Long, and preliminary tests indicated a suspected case of H5 avian influenza.
