Avian influenza breaks out in West Bengal district

14 January 2010

A fresh outbreak of avian influenza was reported in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, prompting the authorities to immediately start a culling drive in the area. The Animal Disease Laboratory (ADL) in Bophal has confirmed the case as H5N1.

Sources said that in the last 10 days, over 1,000 hens and ducks had died mysteriously in Khargram. Indrani, Kirtipur, Parulia, Jaipur and Margram areas were the worst affected.
