The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has released its quarterly sector report (Informe Trimestral Indicadores del Sector Avicultura de Puesta) detailing key structural, economic, and trade indicators across Spain's egg-laying industry through mid-2026.
The latest data highlight three major dynamics shaping the sector:
Accelerated Shift to Alternative Housing Systems: The structural transformation away from conventional caged housing continues to progress. While caged egg farms represented 48% of total registered production facilities in 2015, they accounted for only 24.77% by 2025. Free-range, and barn systems now make up 33.23% and 30.38% of total farms, respectively. Although caged housing still holds the largest share of bird census (59.81%), alternative housing populations grew by 10.25% year-over-year in 2025, reflecting evolving animal welfare standards and market demand.
Strong Intra-EU Trade Dynamics :Spanish foreign trade expanded robustly in early 2026. Intra-EU exports of consumption eggs surged by 45.46% (January–March 2025 vs. 2026), driven by increased shipments to key markets including France (+35.90%), Italy (+54.06%), the Netherlands (+57.42%), and Germany (+117%). Conversely, total extra-EU exports contracted by 43.11% over the same period, led by declines in destinations such as the UK and Mexico.
