Poultry Consumption Trends in Italy

30 June 2026

The Italian poultry supply chain continues to expand, reinforcing its strategic role in the country's economy and food security. Data presented by Unaitalia, the association representing poultry and egg producers, at its Members' Meeting held in Bologna highlight a robust and competitive sector well positioned to meet consumer demand in 2025. National poultry production increased by 1.73% compared with 2024, while per capita consumption reached a record 22.47 kg (+1.91%), confirming poultry's central role in Italians' dietary habits. Today, nine out of ten Italians consume poultry, and the sector accounts for 44% of total household meat purchases. This increase in consumption has been accompanied by a high level of production self-sufficiency (105.1%), enabling the sector to make a substantial contribution to the stability of the national food supply.
The egg sector also performed strongly, recording growth of 15% in value and 7.4% in volume. Per capita consumption reached 234 eggs, an increase of 7.3% compared with the previous year.
With approximately 64,000 employees and a turnover of €9.7 billion in 2025, the poultry sector is one of the most important segments of the Italian agri-food industry. This total comprises €6.2 billion generated by the poultry meat sector and €3.73 billion by the egg sector.
