Why Organic and Free-Range Production Can Harm the Environment?

A nationwide life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted in the UK and published in Royal Society Open Science challenges the prevailing assumption that animal welfare-driven policy shifts inherently align with ecological sustainability.
While consumer preference and regulatory trends increasingly push for a transition away from caged housing toward free-range and organic egg production, the study demonstrates that extensive housing systems, and organic farming in particular, carry a significantly higher environmental footprint per unit of output than intensified, cage-based operations.
The comprehensive evaluation revealed that fully organic free-range systems performed worst across all primary environmental impact indicators:
- Elevated Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Producing 1 kg of eggs in an organic system generates approximately 3.52 kg CO2-equivalent, compared to just 1.80 kg CO2-equivalent in enriched cages. A complete national transition to organic egg production would increase global warming potential by 60.95% relative to baseline practices.
- Extensive Land Occupation: Organic egg production requires 5.70 sqm per year per kilogram of eggs, more than double the land footprint of cage systems. Approximately 96% of this land footprint is attributable to crop cultivation for organic feed rather than on-farm hen housing space.
- Lower Feed Conversion Efficiency: Hens in free-range and organic environments burn more energy due to outdoor movement and thermoregulation, reducing feed conversion efficiency. Furthermore, organic feed production yields lower crop mass per hectare, expanding total land requirements.
- Higher Mortality & Larger Population Requirements: On-farm mortality rates are substantially higher in organic (8.0%) and non-organic free-range (7.0%) systems than in furnished cages (2.5%). Because individual hen productivity is lower, sustaining national egg demand requires a larger overall layer population.
