Brazil: Nationwide Ban on Foie Gras Production and Imports

27 July 2026

The President of Brazil has signed into law a comprehensive federal ban prohibiting the production, sale, and importation of foie gras across the country. The sweeping legislation effectively outlaws both the domestic force-feeding of geese and ducks and the commercial distribution of foreign-made liver products within Brazilian territory.
The legislative move has sparked considerable pushback from the French government, which regards foie gras as an integral component of its national culinary and cultural heritage. France exerted diplomatic pressure to prevent the enactment of the law, arguing that its production follows regulated procedures and contending that the ban undermines international trade agreements and culinary traditions.
However, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry and executive leadership reaffirmed their stance, highlighting that the measure passed unanimously in the Brazilian Congress. Officials underscored that moral and ethical considerations surrounding the prevention of animal cruelty took precedence over external diplomatic lobbying.

The diplomatic friction surrounding the ban illustrates persistent double standards in global trade. Under the guise of preserving cultural heritage and gastronomic legacy, international pressure is often deployed to defend agricultural practices that inflict severe harm on animal welfare.
