Poland: Over 7 Million Birds Culled in 2025 Due to Newcastle Disease

25 December 2025

A comprehensive report released by the Polish Veterinary Services, updated as of December 23, 2025, reveals a stark escalation of Newcastle Disease (ND) outbreaks across the country. The data indicates a significant epidemiological shift, posing a severe threat to the regional poultry industry.
In 2025, Poland identified 80 distinct outbreaks of Newcastle Disease, a dramatic increase compared to the 21 outbreaks recorded in 2024. The impact on poultry populations has been devastating, with over 7 million birds culled or lost to the disease, more than doubling the 2024 figure of approximately 3 million.
The broiler sector remains the hardest hit, with numerous outbreaks documented throughout the year. The most significant single event occurred on May 29 in Adamowo (Mazovia district), resulting in the culling of 1,349,517 broilers. In response to the crisis, mandatory vaccination for all commercial poultry flocks was implemented across Poland on April 25, 2025. However, the common practice of administering ND vaccines via drinking water appears largely ineffective against these highly virulent field strains.
