Investigation of Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreak Linked to Eggs

13 December 2025

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), in collaboration with local health jurisdictions and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), is currently conducting a coordinated investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections associated with the consumption of commercial eggs.
As of December 5, 2025, surveillance data indicates that 63 California residents have contracted the specific strain associated with this outbreak. Clinical outcomes have resulted in 13 hospitalizations; to date, no mortalities have been reported.
Upon tracing the source of the implicated products, CDPH and CDFA officials executed a sanitary inspection at Vega Farms, Inc., procuring both environmental and product samples for laboratory analysis. Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of Salmonella in multiple specimens. Furthermore, whole genome sequencing analysis determined that the genetic profile of the pathogen found in at least one farm sample corresponds directly to the outbreak strain identified in affected patients.
In response to these findings, Vega Farms, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of Vega Farms brand eggs on December 5, 2025.
