Tissue: Adult egg-layer chicken esophagus (X100)
Description: Esophageal mucosa shows extensive squamous metaplasia of mucous glands and ducts, replacing normal epithelium with keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Keratin and cellular debris obstruct ducts, causing cystic dilation of glands lined by thin squamous epithelium. Affected glands are surrounded by a lymphoplasmacytic and heterophilic inflammatory infiltrate.
Morphologic Diagnosis:
1. Multifocal esophageal glandular squamous metaplasia and cystic dilatation.
2. Multifocal lymphoplasmacytic esophageal adenitis.
Etiology: Vitamin A deficiency. (Dr. Ziv Raviv)
