Two cats euthanized after testing positive for bird flu

15 February, 2025

Two house cats in Multnomah County, Oregon, living in separate households, were euthanized after testing positive for bird flu linked to their consumption of pet food made from raw chicken. The Oregon Department of Agriculture confirmed that both cats were eating the same type of pet food, called "Wild Coast Raw," produced by "Wild Coast Pet Foods."
This is not the first time domestic cats have been infected with the avian flu virus after consuming commercial cat food. This situation indicates that food manufacturers are not fully in control of their supply sources, and their quality control processes are failing to detect the virus in the food they produce, allowing contaminated food to reach the market. Additionally, it is evident that veterinary supervision and reporting are inadequate, allowing infected animals to enter the food chain and subsequently create contaminated food for pets. It is not far-fetched to suggest that contaminated food could also reach humans.
