Salmonella Hadar infections linked to backyard poultry

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials in several states report investigating an outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to contact with live poultry, such as chicks and ducklings, in backyard flocks.A total of 46 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Hadar were reported from 11 states.
13 ill persons were hospitalized. No deaths were reported. 30% of ill persons were children 10 years of age or younger. Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback findings linked this outbreak of human Salmonella infections to contact with live poultry from a hatchery in Idaho. This particular outbreak appears to be over.
