Tamil Nadu (India) bans mayonnaise made from raw eggs for one year
The Tamil Nadu government has imposed a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of mayonnaise made with raw eggs, effective from April 8, 2025. This decision stems from significant public health concerns, particularly the risk of foodborne illnesses due to contamination by harmful bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis and other pathogens. While the ban is a preventive measure, it's noteworthy that similar actions in other states have followed reported food poisoning incidents. For instance, Telangana implemented a one-year ban on raw egg-based mayonnaise in October 2024 after multiple food poisoning cases, including the death of a 31-year-old woman who consumed contaminated mayonnaise from a street vendor.
