Hendrix-ISA to adopt Respeggt Tech to end male chick culling in U.S.
Hendrix-ISA LLC, a global leader in animal genetics, has announced the implementation of Respeggt technology to address the controversial practice of day-old male chick culling in the poultry industry. This innovative solution provides a more ethical and sustainable option for poultry farmers in the U.S.
Following careful and thorough consideration, Hendrix-ISA will integrate this cutting-edge in-ovo sexing technology into its hatchery operations in Nebraska in early Q1 2025.
The decision is based on Respeggt’s exceptional track record in Europe, particularly with the strong performance of Dekalb White genetics. “The technology will be the first in the U.S. to enable sexing for both brown and white breeds,” said Neal Martin, General Manager of Hendrix-ISA. Respeggt technology allows for the early determination of a chick's sex before hatching, thereby eliminating the need to cull male chicks - a widely debated and controversial practice. This breakthrough aligns with Hendrix Genetics’ commitment to sustainability and animal welfare.
“This technology is a game-changer for farmers, helping increase efficiency while adhering to the highest ethical standards,” said Steve Welch, Director of Sales & Marketing.
The adoption of Respeggt marks a new era of innovation in the U.S. poultry industry, prioritizing both the future of farming and the welfare of animals. This spring, Hendrix-ISA will begin implementation with Dekalb White birds for Kipster farms, in collaboration with MPS Egg Farms, to support Kipster’s commitment to eliminating the culling of male chicks.Hendrix-ISA is the first hatchery in the U.S. to offer this animal welfare solution for both white and brown egg brands, bringing the industry closer to ending the practice of male chick culling.
