Decline of 13% in U.S. poultry production and sales value

According to a new report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the combined value of production from broilers, eggs, turkeys, and the value of sales from chickens in 2023 was $67.1 billion, down 13 percent from $77.2 billion in 2022. Of the combined total, 64 percent was from broilers, 27 percent from eggs, 10 percent from turkeys, and less than 1 percent from chickens. The value of broilers produced during 2023 was $42.6 billion, down 16 percent from 2022. The total number of broilers produced in 2023 was 9.16 billion, down slightly from 2022.
The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 2023 was 59.7 billion pounds, up slightly from 2022. The value of turkeys produced during 2023 was $6.57 billion, down 8 percent from the $7.12 billion the previous year.
The total number of turkeys raised in 2023 was 218 million, up 4 percent from 2022. Turkey production in 2023 totaled 6.99 billion pounds, up 5 percent from the 6.67 billion pounds produced in 2022.
The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 2023 was $62.0 million, down 18 percent from $75.4 million a year ago. The number of chickens sold in 2023 totaled 178 million, up 4 percent from the total sold during the previous year.
Value of all egg production in 2023 was $17.9 billion, down 8 percent from $19.4 billion in 2022. Egg production totaled 110 billion eggs, down slightly from 110 billion eggs produced in 2022.
