S. Enteritidis linked to consumption of chicken meat

ECDC 1 September, 2023

In July of 2023, Denmark identified a microbiological cluster of Salmonella Enteritidis ST11 infections with sample collection dating back to May. As of August 25, 2023, a total of 97 cases, encompassing both recent (2023) and historical isolates closely linked genetically, had been reported across 11 EU/EEA countries.
Within Denmark, the majority of the 19 cases interviewed had mentioned consuming kebab or pizza, which possibly contained chicken imported from Poland as an ingredient, prior to experiencing symptoms.
In early August 2023, Austria reported an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis ST11 infections, tragically resulting in one fatality. The first case in this cluster was noted to have onset in mid-March, with the most recent case developing symptoms in mid-July 2023. By August 25, 2023, Austria had recorded eight cases, and five out of the eight interviewed cases had reported consuming chicken kebab meat imported from Poland.
