Single source detected: H5N1 Avian Flu in Polish cats

3 July, 2023

A preliminary analysis was conducted by the Polish National Veterinary Institute on nine cats infected with H5N1 avian influenza in Poland. The virus was found to be linked to strains present in both poultry and wild birds. Cases of feline illness and death have been reported across various areas, including among indoor cats, and the origin of the virus remains unclear. According to the report, these viruses belong to the same genotype and show the closest resemblance to samples obtained from storks in June. This particular genotype was prevalent during the peak of the 2022-23 season and was primarily detected in poultry in the Wielkopolska province, as well as in wild birds from several regions throughout Poland. The report does not mention mutations that might make the virus more adaptable to mammals. Scientists believe that the feline H5N1 viruses examined so far are derived from a single, unknown source, and more detailed genetic analysis is underway to more accurately assess the possibility of zoonotic disease.
