Outbreak with Salmonella Muenchen sequence type 82 in Denmark

Since March 2023, the State Serum Institute (SSI) has registered 30 cases of Salmonella Muenchen. The State Serum Institute, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Norwegian Food Institute DTU are investigating the disease outbreak.
From March to June 2023, 30 people infected with the same type of Salmonella were registered at the State Serum Institute. Among the sick are 12 men and 18 women. The patients are between 10-95 years old (median age is 72 years). The patients live throughout the country.
The outbreak is handled by the Central Outbreak Group, which consists of SSI, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the DTU Food Institute. SSI stands for whole-genome sequencing of isolates from the patients and interviews with patients or relatives with a view to identifying a possible source of infection.
The bacteria is of the type Salmonella Muenchen. When whole-genome sequencing of the bacteria that were isolated from the patients, it was seen that they were very closely related and all belonged to sequence type 82.
