Brazil: first case of HPAI in backyard poultry

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock announced on Tuesday (27/6) that the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 has been identified in a small-scale farm where ducks, geese, and chickens were present. This detection occurred in Serra, a municipality located in the state of Espírito Santo. This marks the first instance of an outbreak in poultry intended for subsistence since the virus entered Brazil on May 15. Presently, Brazil has identified 50 HPAI cases in wild birds across various states, namely Espírito Santo, Bahia, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.
