Zoonotic pathogens in Scotland Biennial Report 2020/2021

A new report presents provisional information on laboratory reports of gastrointestinal and zoonotic pathogens in Scotland up to the end of 2021.
Campylobacter: In 2020, Public Health Scotland (PHS) received 5392 laboratory reports of Campylobacter.
In 2021, 5890 laboratory reports of Campylobacter were received.
The highest incidence rates continue to be seen in young children (aged 0-4 years) and older adults (aged 65+ years).
In 2020, the overall incidence rate (number of laboratory reports per 100,000 population) of Campylobacter in Scotland was 98.6, compared with 107.8 in 2021.
Salmonella: In 2020, PHS received 342 laboratory reports of human non-typhoidal Salmonella in Scotland.
In 2021, 330 laboratory reports of non-typhoidal Salmonella were received. Both 2020 and 2021 showed a decrease on the 757 laboratory reports received in 2019.
The rates of infection of non-typhoidal Salmonella vary across the population, with overall higher incidence rates observed in children under 5 years of age compared with older children.
In 2020, the overall incidence rate (number of laboratory reports per 100,000 population) of human non-typhoidal Salmonella in Scotland was 6.3, compared with 6.0 in 2021.
The two most reported serotypes remain Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium.
