Campylobacter: The European Union Zoonoses Report -2021
Campylobacteriosis is the most commonly reported foodborne gastrointestinal infection in humans in the EU and has been so since 2007.
In 2021, 127,840 confirmed cases of human campylobacteriosis were reported by the 27 EU MSs, corresponding to an EU notification rate of 41.1 cases per 100,000 population. This is an increase of 2.1% compared with 2020 (40.2 per 100,000 population) and a decrease of 36.1% and 28.1% compared with the average annual notification rate from 2017 to 2019 (pre-pandemic period), with and without United Kingdom data, respectively. Of the cases with known hospitalisation status, 10,469 (23.2%) were hospitalised. Twenty-six deaths from campylobacteriosis were reported in 2021, resulting in an EU case fatality rate of 0.03%.
