Italy: H5N1 outbreak among turkeys

22 October, 2021

On 18 October 2021, the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease confirmed as positive for Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5 in a fattening turkey farm in Verona province (Veneto region). On 19 October, the virus was characterized as Highly Pathogenicity Avian Influenza subtype H5N1. At the time of confirmation, the farm housed about 13,000 birds. Considering the presence of a hunting area for waterfowls near the infected farm, indirect contact with the wild reservoir has been identified as the most likely source of virus introduction. Culling, cleaning and disinfection procedures are ongoing. Protection and surveillance zones (3 and 10 km) around infected holding have been defined, and control measures were implemented as provided by the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687.
