2020 U.S. Broiler chicken industry sustainability report

Release of the National Chicken Council Inaugural Sustainability Report incorporating the Broiler Production System Life Cycle Assessment: 2020 clearly demonstrates the advancement in performance and the consequential reduction in inputs and emissions associated with growing broilers in the U.S.
Between 2010 and 2020 the U.S. chicken industry produced 21% more chicken by weight. Over the ten-year study period, broiler production increased by 9.3 percent to 9.23 billion birds, but with a 21.3 percent increase in live mass to 58.79 billion pounds. Live-weight increased by 11 percent to 6.37 pounds per bird, but feed conversion declined by 8.7 percent to 1.79. 
With regard to environmental impact:
- 18% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint)
- 13% less water consumption
- 13% less land use
- 22% reduction in fossil resource scarcity
- 22% less fine particulate matter formation
