H5N8 avian influenza in The Netherlands

22 October, 2020

Highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza was diagnosed in two dead mute swans (Cygnus olor).
The two swans entered were part of a group of six swans that were found dead in the Netherlands, near Kockengen (Utrecht).
The mute swans were submitted for diagnostic testing as part of the wild bird surveillance program for avian influenza virus. The HA cleavage site PLREKRRKR*GLF showed polybasic properties characteristic of highly pathogenic viruses.
Last month the European Union urged countries to step up surveillance against possible outbreaks of avian flu among wild and domestic birds.
