USDA Releases Roadmap to Address Salmonella

19 September, 2020

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Food Safety (OFS) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) have released a plan to decrease Salmonella, one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses.
The Roadmap to Reducing Salmonella: Driving Change through Science-Based Policy outlines programs and policies that are science-based, data-driven, and promote innovation to reduce Salmonella in meat, poultry, and egg products.
Using outbreak data through 2017 the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration (IFSAC) estimates that approximately 38% of foodborne salmonellosis in the United States is attributed to meat and poultry products. These data highlight that the Agency plays an important role in helping achieve national public health goals aimed at reducing foodborne illness caused by Salmonella.
