Philippines: avian influenza outbreak in Pampanga

29 July, 2020

Philippines notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza (HPAI) at a farm in San Carlos, San Luis, Pampanga in Central Luzon. Workers at the commercial layer poultry farm noticed a sudden drop in egg production, bluish discoloration of the comb, white nasal discharge, death within 12 hours at the onset of clinical signs.
Nearly 39,000 birds had to be culled.
In March, the Department of Agriculture detected an avian influenza outbreak involving the same virus strain in a quail farm in Jaen municipality in Nueva Ecija province, where about 1,500 quails had died and some 12,000 others had been culled.
