Early feeding to become mandatory in Dutch hatcheries

19 October, 2019

Hatcheries in the Netherlands will be forced to introduce early feeding after a court ruled in favour of an animal rights organisation, Wakker Dier.
It now means chicks must receive feed and water within 36 hours of hatching, rather than the 60 hours that is currently standard practice. As not all hatcheries have the possibility to supply water and feed in the hatcher, and procurement of the equipment cannot be immediate, a 5 year transition period was granted.
