Campylobacter infection in Ireland, 2018

Campylobacteriosis is an acute zoonotic bacterial disease.  It is the commonest bacterial cause of gastroenteritis in Ireland and Europe. During 2018, 3,030 cases of campylobacteriosis were reported, an increase of 8.7 percent compared with 2,786 patients in 2017. The highest rate of notification was in the 0-4 year age group. C. jejuni accounted for >90% of cases and there where three small general outbreaks in 2018 reported as foodborne -no sources were identified.
