Florida considers abolishing school vaccine mandates

4 September, 2025

On September 3, 2025, Florida’s Deputy Health Secretary announced that the state aims to abolish all mandatory vaccinations for children in public schools, including immunizations against measles, chickenpox, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, vaccines that by law are regarded as essential. The initiative is backed by Governor Ron DeSantis, who belongs to a political current emphasizing individual rights and medical freedom. This move continues a trend that began with the appointment of Kennedy as Health Secretary and undermines fundamental structures of the American, and even global, healthcare system. Health authorities across the state and the United States have voiced strong opposition, warning of the risks involved. This controversial initiative unfolds in the midst of a measles outbreak in the U.S., the most significant surge in cases in three decades.
Legally, it is not possible to abolish all vaccine mandates by administrative order alone. Some of the requirements are anchored in Florida state law, which necessitates a full legislative process in the state’s legislature. This means the proposal must pass through committees, debates, and votes in both chambers of the local parliament. Even with a Republican majority, not all lawmakers are inclined to support such a drastic weakening of public health, especially under pressure from medical professionals and concerned parents.
What can be erased in a moment may take generations to repair.
