Spain: Surge in Egg Prices

According to Spanish News Today, egg prices in Spain have risen sharply in recent months. The cost of a dozen medium-sized eggs has climbed from €2.14 in February to €3.14, while large eggs have increased from €2.33 to €3.25 over the same period. Data from the Spanish Consumers’ Organization (OCU) indicate that egg prices have surged by approximately 137 % since 2021.
The primary factor behind this escalation is the widespread outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI; H5N1) across Spain. The country maintains an estimated 47.8 million laying hens, of which approximately 2.65 million have died or been culled this year as a consequence of HPAI.
