France Faces Egg Shortages Amid Surging Demand
France has been experiencing a significant shortage of table eggs in recent weeks, following a sharp increase in consumer demand. In 2024, average per capita consumption reached 226 eggs, a 4.7% rise compared to 2023, and in 2025 there was a further surge of about 4.2% in the first quarter alone. As a result, some supermarkets have reported empty egg shelves, particularly in areas where transport restrictions or logistical difficulties are more pronounced.
Although France is one of the largest egg producers in the European Union, current production has been unable to keep pace with demand, and some retailers have had to resort to imports, mainly eggs from Ukraine.
One of the planned measures to address the issue is the establishment of around 300 new poultry farms, with an investment of approximately €300 million by 2030.
