EU Egg Trade Surges in Early 2025
According to the European Commission, egg trade volumes between the EU and its partners rose sharply in January-May 2025. Extra-EU egg imports increased by 34%, reaching 62.9 thousand tonnes compared to 46.9 thousand tonnes in the same period of 2024. Ukraine remained the leading supplier with a 62% rise, while North Macedonia recorded a remarkable 135% increase. In contrast, imports from the United Kingdom fell by 5.5%. EU exports also grew by 32%, totaling 198.8 thousand tonnes. Switzerland stood out with more than doubling its imports from the EU, while exports to Japan declined by 4.7%. Israel recorded a notable 61% increase in egg imports from the EU. In terms of production, the EU counted around 391 million laying hens in 2024, with 61.9% kept in non-cage systems. Germany and France led production, each accounting for about 15% of the total flock.
Average EU egg prices remained relatively stable at around €260 per 100 kg, with significant differences between production systems, cage eggs being cheaper compared to free-range and organic.
