Switzerland: Rising egg demand drives surge in imports
1 May, 2025
The Swiss population’s demand for eggs is rising sharply. Between 2023 and 2024 alone, per capita consumption increased by nine eggs to 198 eggs per year - an increase of nearly 5 percent. Although domestic production rose by 2.8 percent during this period, part of the additional demand must be met through imports.
At the request of the egg industry, the Federal Council raised the tariff quota for table eggs by 48 percent, reaching 31,000 tons as of April 30, 2025. This adjustment will allow for the importation of approximately 158 million eggs by the end of the year at a reduced tariff rate. The significantly expanded tariff quota is intended to ensure an adequate domestic supply of table eggs for the current year.
