First Human Case of H5N5

A Grays Harbor County, Washington, resident tested positive for H5N5 avian influenza virus. The patient is an older adult with underlying health conditions. The patient had a backyard flock of "mixed domestic poultry." This is the first known human infection with the H5N5 virus. In 2024 and early 2025, infections were reported in 70 people in the U.S. most of them workers on dairy and poultry farms. One person died.
