Campylobacter in Denmark

30 September, 2025

According to the Annual Report on Zoonoses in Denmark 2024 (published 2025), Campylobacter remains the leading bacterial cause of foodborne infections in Denmark, with both human outbreaks and extensive surveillance in poultry production being central to the national monitoring system.
Ten Campylobacter outbreaks were reported, comparable to the 11 registered in 2023. Most outbreaks (nine of ten) were caused by Campylobacter jejuni; one was attributed to C. coli. In seven outbreaks, chicken meat was identified as the source, confirmed by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) linking human isolates with food samples, including one case involving imported chicken.
