Sweden: Salmonella Outbreak in Nursing Homes

19 September, 2025

A Salmonella outbreak at a nursing home in Sörmland has been identified as part of a wider outbreak, with eggs considered the likely source of infection, according to an analysis by the Public Health Agency.
Cases have been reported in eleven regions across the country, with 48 confirmed infections linked to the outbreak. Of these, 18 cases are in Sörmland.
Genetic analysis confirmed that the same Salmonella strain caused all cases. The strain was also detected at an egg producer, which recalled its eggs on August 27.
Residents of nursing homes represent a high-risk group for Salmonella infection, and a clear policy regarding egg consumption is required. The recommendation must be that eggs supplied to nursing homes should be pasteurized, or alternatively, thoroughly cooked.
