Economic impact of 2022–23 HPAI outbreaks on Japanese poultry farms
A study published in The Journal of Veterinary Medical Science examines the economic impact of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks on poultry farms in Japan during the 2022–2023 season.
The study estimates the direct economic losses incurred by farms, as well as the financial burden borne by the national and prefectural governments due to compensation payments. Between October 2022 and April 2023, HPAI outbreaks in Japan led to the culling of approximately 17.7 million birds. The total economic losses were estimated at approximately 16.9 billion yen for the national government, 183.5 million yen for the affected prefectures, and 14.2 billion yen for the infected poultry farms.
These estimates do not include the costs associated with disease control measures.
