HPAI H5N1 outbreak in South Africa
2 July, 2025
South Africa has confirmed new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) on two poultry farms in Tswaing (North West Province) and one in Mkhondo (Mpumalanga Province). These represent the first confirmed detections of H5N1 in the country since the severe outbreak of September 2023, which caused widespread disruption to the poultry sector.
That previous outbreak resulted in the loss of nearly one-third of the national chicken population and inflicted an estimated economic impact of R9.5 billion, leading to significant shortages of eggs and poultry meat.
