Austrian salmonella outbreak tied to poultry
Since December 2024, 35 people in Austria have fallen ill with a specific strain of salmonella. The Ministry of Health has commissioned AGES to investigate this food-borne outbreak. Based on the positive test results from food and veterinary samples from poultry farms, the current hypothesis is that the source of infection may be found in eggs, egg products or chicken meat. The outbreak strain is Salmonella Enteritidis with sequence type (ST) 11 and complex type (CT) 14117.
