Poland: New measures to contain avian influenza
According to a Reuters report, the European Commission has approved a series of measures proposed by Poland to contain the spread of bird flu. The measures will be implemented immediately.
Poland has recorded 79 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry in 2025, compared to a total of 50 outbreaks in all of 2024. In response, the European Commission had been considering the imposition of emergency measures on the country.
The Commission has agreed to implement 13 measures proposed by Poland, including expanding the designated risk areas around outbreak sites, reducing the density of poultry houses, and introducing additional disinfection procedures.
The measures will be applied in the three regions with the highest number of outbreaks.
The Commission will assess the effectiveness of these measures between April 22 and 24.
